The Values of Publishing

A panel discussion to end the conference on Thursday 10th of November

This panel will address some of the values underpinning the contemporary publishing landscape. Considering the increased focus on open science in research policies as a means to increase transparency, reproducibility and accessibility in science, the panel will discuss how the publishing landscape relates to this broader notion of openness. In comparison to other aspects of open science, contemporary publishing may appear as a mature venture, fully aligned with the goals of open science. But is it really?

Considering current discussions on open science and its role for transparency, reproducibility, accessibility, and involvement of stakeholders, how does contemporary publishing fit in this? What roles does academic publishing and publishers play for scientific communication in the contemporary geopolitical landscape? Are some of the values underpinning scientific publishing on a colliding trajectory? This panel will address values in contemporary publishing. More specifically, it aims to highlight different stakeholders’ views on scholarly publishing in light of past developments and current expectations on, and connected to, open science.
